The last three years of my life were spent in a haze of self-hatred, sabotage, and self- perpetuated confusion. I ceased to know who I was, who I wanted to be, and I certainly had ceased to care. I was a heroin addict and had accepted my fate with all the fervor of a person wanting to die.

On my 22nd birthday, my mother approached me with a suggestion. For that moment she seemed to look past the misery and shame that I couldn’t help but project… she spoke to me as though I was still the person I used to be.
